Global desktop monitor shipments hit 133.4 million units in 2025, a 4.3 percent rebound after two down years (Omdia, Desktop Monitor Market Tracker 2026). The recovery was lopsided: gaming monitors alone accounted for 41 million of those units, up 50.2 percent year over year (Omdia, 2026). OLED panels, still barely 2.1 percent of the market, surged 92 percent to 2.735 million units as the technology moved from halo product to mainstream premium tier (TrendForce, 2026). Meanwhile 1080p refuses to die, holding 52.83 percent of Steam gaming displays in late 2025 (Valve, Steam Hardware Survey 2025). This analysis consolidates data from Omdia, TrendForce, IDC, Valve’s Steam Hardware Survey, and 6 other primary sources into 40+ verifiable data points on the monitor market.

1. Market Size and Shipments
The monitor market spent 2023 and 2024 digesting a pandemic hangover; 2025 was the year demand normalized. Omdia’s 133.4 million-unit tally for 2025 is the strongest annual volume since the post-pandemic reset, up 4.3 percent on 2024’s 127.9 million. IDC frames the plateau differently, expecting annual volumes to settle into a 132 to 135 million-unit band rather than return to boom-era peaks. Revenue grows slower than units because average selling prices are held down by aggressive Chinese panel supply.

See the Omdia shipment release and The Business Research Company report for the underlying figures.
2. Gaming Monitors Drive the Recovery
Strip gaming out of the 2025 numbers and the monitor market barely moved. Gaming monitors jumped 50.2 percent to 41 million units and now represent 31.1 percent of every desktop monitor shipped (Omdia, 2026) - close to one in three. Omdia notes gaming shipments rose for eleven straight quarters, and dual-mode panels that trade resolution for refresh rate are set for double-digit growth in 2026. This segment carries the market’s growth and most of its margin, part of a broader PC hardware upcycle covered in our PC gaming hardware statistics.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming monitor shipments, 2025 | 41M units (+50.2% YoY) | Omdia, 2026 |
| Gaming share of desktop monitors, 2025 | 31.1% | Omdia, 2026 |
| Gaming monitor shipments, 2026 (proj.) | ~43M units | Omdia, 2026 |

Outlier note: revenue estimates for gaming monitors diverge by definition, with Future Market Insights valuing the segment closer to 12.36 billion dollars in 2025; unit data from the Omdia release is the firmer figure.
3. The OLED Monitor Surge
OLED is the fastest-moving story in displays, but keep it in proportion. OLED monitor shipments nearly doubled in 2025 to 2.735 million units, a 92 percent jump - yet that is still only 2.1 percent of the total market (TrendForce, 2026). The real shift is inside the premium tier: QD-OLED alone made up 73 percent of OLED monitor shipments, up from 68 percent a year earlier. Quarterly momentum has been steep, with Q1 2025 shipments nearly tripling year over year before the growth rate cooled against a larger base.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| OLED monitor shipments, 2025 | 2.735M units (+92% YoY) | TrendForce, 2026 |
| OLED share of total monitor market, 2025 | 2.1% | TrendForce, 2026 |
| OLED penetration forecast, 2028 | 5.4% | TrendForce, 2026 |
| OLED monitor shipments forecast, 2026 | >4M units (+51%) | TrendForce, 2026 |

| OLED monitor shipments, Q3 2025 | 644,000 units (+65% YoY) | TrendForce, 2025 |
Outlier note: Q1 2026 OLED shipments rose 78 percent year over year but fell 11 percent quarter over quarter, a seasonal dip after aggressive year-end promotions pulled demand forward (TrendForce, 2026). Full figures are in the TrendForce OLED release.
4. Resolution and Refresh Rate Adoption
Retail shelves and the installed base disagree. Stores push 1440p and 4K, but real desks stay on 1080p: Valve’s Steam Hardware Survey put 1920x1080 at 52.83 percent of primary gaming displays in November 2025, still a majority though down from 55.98 percent a year earlier. 1440p is the clear gainer, while 4K sits under 5 percent, gated largely by GPU cost. 4K adoption on PC lags consoles, where 4K output ships as standard (see console market statistics). At the bleeding edge, refresh rates have climbed to 600Hz.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p (1920x1080) primary display share | 52.83% (Nov 2025, from 55.98%) | Valve, Steam Survey 2025 |

| Fastest QD-OLED refresh rate | 500Hz (1440p) | TrendForce, 2025 |
Outlier note: laptop-era 1366x768 still held 2.40 percent of Steam displays, and the March 2026 survey showed 1080p slipping further to 51.93 percent (Valve, 2026). Data from the Steam Hardware Survey and refresh-rate ceilings from Tom’s Hardware.
5. Brands and Panel Makers
The finished-monitor and panel-supply layers have different leaders. In OLED monitors, ASUS overtook Samsung in 2025 to lead with 21.6 percent share (TrendForce, 2026), riding its ROG and ProArt lines. Look one layer down, though, and China’s BOE dominates the glass, shipping 36.2 percent of all large-area LCD panels. The brand race keeps tightening. Monitors are one leg of a wider desk-peripheral upgrade cycle that also lifts audio gear, as our gaming headset statistics show.

| Innolux large-area LCD share, 2025 | 11.7% | Omdia, 2026 |
Outlier note: by Q1 2026 ASUS had stretched its OLED lead to 24 percent while Samsung slipped to 16.4 percent and newcomer AOC/Philips leapt to 12.1 percent (TrendForce, 2026). Brand data from the TrendForce OLED release; panel-maker shares from Omdia.
6. Form Factors and Regional Shifts
Beyond the mainstream flat 27-inch panel, the growth pockets are curved, ultrawide, portable, and mini-LED - and the geography of demand is moving. TrendForce data shows North America’s share of OLED monitor shipments fell from 44 percent in 2024 to 33 percent in 2025 as U.S. tariff uncertainty pushed brands to diversify, while China’s share jumped from 14 to 21 percent on gaming and internet-cafe upgrades. Portable and secondary displays are a smaller but faster-growing tier, echoing the desk-camera boom in our webcam market statistics.
