About 22.5 percent of internet users aged 16 and over worldwide used a voice assistant in a typical week at the end of 2025 (GWI data via DataReportal and We Are Social, Q4 2025), a figure that tops out at 33.7 percent in Mexico and is as low as 13.3 percent in France. That is a large audience, but nowhere near the ‘50 percent of all searches by 2020’ that still circulates in SEO decks. Meanwhile 39 percent of Americans aged 12+ now own a smart speaker (Edison Research, The Infinite Dial 2026), and Google reports that more than one in six AI Mode searches are multimodal, using voice, images or video (Google, May 2026). The real story of 2026 is that spoken search did not replace typing: it merged into conversational AI search, as our AI search statistics roundup also shows. We aggregated data from Edison Research, GWI, DataReportal, Pew Research Center, Alphabet SEC filings, Google Search Central, BrightEdge, Gartner, Amazon, Backlinko, and other primary sources listed in the methodology.
TL;DR
- 22.5% of internet users 16+ use a voice assistant weekly worldwide (GWI via DataReportal, Q4 2025).
- Mexico leads weekly voice assistant use at 33.7%, the US follows at 28.8% (GWI via DataReportal, Q4 2025).
- 39% of Americans 12+ own a smart speaker, up from 35% a year earlier (Edison Research, The Infinite Dial 2026).
- 45% of UK adults 16+ own a smart speaker, versus 25% in 2021 (Edison Research, The Infinite Dial UK 2025).
- Google handles more than 5 trillion searches a year, up from 2 trillion in 2016 (Google, March 2025).
- The ‘50% of searches by voice by 2020’ stat was never published by Comscore; it was a 2014 Baidu forecast about voice and image search combined (Brodie Clark analysis of the Fast Company interview).
- The average AI Mode search is three times longer than a traditional search (Google, AI Mode one-year data, May 2026).
- More than 1 in 6 AI Mode searches use voice, images or video (Google, May 2026).
- 53% of Google searches with 10+ words triggered an AI summary versus 8% of one or two word searches (Pew Research Center, 2025).
- Users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without one (Pew Research Center, 2025).
- 40.7% of Google Home voice answers came from featured snippets (Backlinko, 2018; most recent available study of its kind).
- Monthly search engine use fell to 80.3% of online adults, the lowest level GWI has recorded (DataReportal, Digital 2026).
1. Voice Assistant Adoption by Country and Age
The global weekly figure hides a wide spread. Mexico (33.7%) uses voice assistants weekly at roughly five times the rate of Morocco (6.8%), and several large Western European markets sit well below the 22.5% world average: Germany at 21.2%, France at 13.3%, Netherlands at 11.0%. Voice is strongest where mobile-first internet use, Spanish or Portuguese-language assistants, and Android penetration overlap, and weakest in markets with many languages per country or a strong typing culture.
For SEO planning, this means voice is a market-by-market decision rather than a global switch. A brand targeting Mexico, the US, Turkey or South Korea has an audience where more than a quarter of online adults speak to an assistant every week; a brand targeting Japan (13.5%) or Poland (12.4%) does not. The country list comes from GWI’s Q4 2025 wave as published in Statista’s chart of voice assistant use by territory (sourced to DataReportal and We Are Social).

Use cases split almost evenly between asking and doing. 21% of consumers use a voice assistant to find information each week, and 20% use one to complete an action such as playing a song or ordering something, out of 32% who used one in the past week (GWI, Voice search trends for 2026). Millennials lead at 34% weekly use, and 1 in 3 consumers with a visual impairment use voice assistants weekly, a reminder that voice optimization overlaps with accessibility. GWI also reports that monthly US usage grew 46% for Google Assistant, 40% for Siri and 26% for Alexa between 2020 and 2024.

Context note: the 32% (GWI) and 22.5% (GWI via DataReportal) figures come from different cuts and age bases and should not be read as a decline. The NPR figures are the most recent available data from the Smart Audio Report (2022).
2. Smart Speakers: The Install Base Behind Spoken Queries
Smart speaker ownership looked stuck for years, then moved. 39% of Americans aged 12+ own a smart speaker in 2026, up 4 points in a single year and the largest gain since 2021 (Edison Research at SSRS, The Power of Audio 2026, reporting The Infinite Dial 2026). In 2025 the share was 35%, an estimated 101 million people, and it had hovered around one-third for four straight years. A plausible driver is the generative AI refresh of the assistants themselves, though Edison does not attribute the jump to a cause. Our smart speaker usage statistics go deeper on household behavior.
The UK is further ahead. 45% of UK adults 16+ own a smart speaker, 10 points above the US 2025 level (Edison Research, The Infinite Dial UK 2025), and Amazon dominates with 37% owning an Alexa device. The commercial point: the device most people speak to at home is still an Amazon speaker, while the device they search on is a phone running Google or Apple software. Optimizing for ‘voice search’ therefore means optimizing for at least two very different answer engines.

Context note: the 600 million Alexa device count comes from Amazon’s Alexa+ announcement and counts devices, not people or active users. Amazon has not published an Alexa+ user count in that release.
3. Search Volume Reality Check: Myths vs Measured Data
The most repeated voice search number is also the weakest. ‘50% of all searches will be voice searches by 2020’ was never a Comscore statistic: it traces to a 2014 Fast Company interview in which Andrew Ng, then Baidu’s chief scientist, predicted that ‘at least 50% of all searches are going to be either through images or speech’ within five years, a forecast about Baidu that combined voice and image queries (Brodie Clark’s source trace). Any roundup still citing it as a measured share of searches should be treated as unreliable.
Measured data points the other way. Google said in March 2025 that it sees more than 5 trillion searches a year (Google, AI, personalization and the future of shopping), up from the 2 trillion it disclosed in 2016. Gartner’s February 2024 forecast that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 has not shown up in Google’s own reporting: Alphabet said Search queries hit an all-time high in Q1 2026 and that AI features are driving query growth in Q2 2026.

The nuance is in reach, not volume. Monthly search engine use fell to 80.3% of online adults, the lowest figure GWI has recorded and a 2.5% relative decline over twelve months (DataReportal, Digital 2026 Global Overview). People who still search are searching more, and a slice of discovery has moved into AI assistants. The share of online adults using search engines to research brands dropped from 51.3% in Q2 2024 to 45.8% in Q4 2025 (DataReportal, Digital 2026 Mid-Year Update).

4. Query Characteristics: Longer, Spoken, Conversational
Voice queries were always described as longer and more question-shaped, but until recently there was little hard data. AI search has supplied it. The average AI Mode search is three times longer than a traditional search, and follow-up queries in AI Mode rose more than 40% month over month in the US (Google one-year AI Mode data released May 20, 2026, as reported by Search Engine Journal). Google also says more than one in six AI Mode searches are multimodal, using voice, images or video. That is the closest thing to an official ‘voice search share’ Google has published in years, and it bundles voice with camera input.
Independent data confirms the shape of the shift. Pew Research Center’s tracking of 68,879 real Google searches by 900 US adults found that the longer and more question-like a query, the more likely Google answers it directly: 53% of searches with 10 or more words produced an AI summary, versus 8% of one or two word searches, and 60% of queries that began with a question word did (Pew Research Center, July 2025). Spoken, natural-language queries are exactly the ones most likely to be answered without a click.

Engine behavior differs sharply. 96% of ChatGPT prompts that earned citations were phrased as questions, versus 21% on Google AI Overviews, where 53% of cited prompts were three words or fewer (BrightEdge, AI search query intent evolution, May 2026). Intent also diverges: 92% of ChatGPT volume is informational versus 71% on AI Overviews, which keeps far more navigational intent (19% vs 2%).

5. AI Assistants Are Absorbing Voice Search
The voice assistant of 2026 is increasingly a generative AI model with a microphone. Google’s AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch (Google, 100 things announced at I/O 2026). In March 2026 Google expanded Search Live, its real-time voice and camera conversation mode, to more than 200 countries and territories, powered by the multilingual Gemini 3.1 Flash Live audio model (Google, Search Live global expansion). Search Live first launched in the US as a Labs experiment on June 18, 2025.
The standalone assistants are now larger than any smart speaker platform. The Gemini app reached 950 million monthly active users in Q2 2026, up from more than 750 million in Q4 2025 (Alphabet earnings releases), and OpenAI reported 800 million weekly ChatGPT users in October 2025. In the US, 57% of people aged 12+ have used a generative AI assistant (Edison Research, The Infinite Dial 2026), well above the share who own a smart speaker. For brands, the ‘voice search’ audience and the AI assistant audience have become the same people, which is why our voice assistant statistics now track both.

Visual search, the other half of Andrew Ng’s 2014 prediction, has grown faster than voice. Google Lens is used by more than 1.5 billion people a month and grew 65% year over year, with more than 100 billion visual searches by June 2025 (Think with Google, Lens co-founder interview). The forecast that missed for voice alone is arguably arriving for voice plus camera inside AI search.

6. Optimization: What Gets Spoken, Cited and Clicked
Most voice SEO advice still rests on one study. Backlinko’s analysis of 10,000 Google Home results found 40.7% of voice answers came from featured snippets, and the average answer was just 29 words (Backlinko Voice Search SEO Study). It was published in February 2018, so it is the most recent available study of its kind, not current evidence: Google Assistant has since been folded into Gemini and smart speaker answers increasingly come from generative models. Its durable lesson is about format: short, direct, self-contained answers near the top of a page that already ranks.
Google’s own documentation is narrower than the hype. The speakable structured data property is still in beta, limited to English-language news publishers and US users of Google Home devices, and Google recommends 20 to 30 seconds of content, roughly two to three sentences, per speakable section. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google states there are ‘no additional requirements’ and no ‘special optimizations necessary’ beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet (Google Search Central, AI features and your website, updated December 2025). If your content reads aloud well, for example in an AI voice generator test pass, it is probably structured well enough for spoken answers too.

| Recommended speakable content per section | 20-30 seconds (2-3 sentences) | Google Search Central, speakable documentation |

The cost of being the answer is fewer clicks. When a Google AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, versus 15% without one, clicked a link inside the summary in only 1% of visits, and ended their browsing session on 26% of those pages versus 16% (Pew Research Center, 2025). BrightEdge measured a 49% rise in Google search impressions and a nearly 30% drop in click-through rate in the first year of AI Overviews (BrightEdge press release, May 2025). For spoken answers, where there is no screen at all, visibility increasingly has to be measured in mentions and citations, not sessions.

- Data watch: No major search engine publishes a standalone voice query share; Google’s closest figure (more than 1 in 6 AI Mode searches are multimodal) combines voice, images and video. The GWI country figures (22.5% worldwide, 16+, Q4 2025) and GWI’s 32% past-week figure use different cuts and age bases, so they are not a trend line. The Infinite Dial 2026 US smart speaker figure (39%) comes from Edison’s public summary; the 101 million population estimate applies to the 2025 study. Backlinko (2018) and the NPR Smart Audio Report (2022) are older than three years and are shown as most recent available data. Google AI Mode one-year data was read through Search Engine Journal’s report of Google’s release. Gartner’s -25% forecast conflicts with Alphabet’s record-query disclosures; the two measure different things (traditional search volume across engines vs Google queries including AI features). Lens figures date from June 2025 and newer totals are likely.
