In October 2026 an average of 91,263 Twitch channels were live at any given moment, out of an estimated 6,209,186 streamers who went live at least once that month: about 1.47% of the monthly streamer base on air at once (TwitchTracker, Twitch Statistics 2026). Those channels shared an audience of 2,189,650 average concurrent viewers in the same month, and Twitch logged 4.51 billion hours watched in Q3 2026 (Streams Charts, Q3 2026 Global Livestreaming Landscape). Behind the screen, the gear economy is growing slowly rather than booming, and the case for spending on it comes from experiments showing that listeners judge the same content more harshly when it sounds bad. For the wider industry picture, see our microphone market statistics. We aggregated data from TwitchTracker, Stream Hatchet and Streamlabs, Streams Charts, Futuresource Consulting, Corsair, Focusrite, the OBS Project, and peer-reviewed studies in PLOS One, Law and Human Behavior, and Science Communication.
TL;DR
- An average of 91,263 Twitch channels were live at any moment in October 2026 (TwitchTracker, Twitch Statistics 2026).
- Unique Twitch channels that broadcast fell 9.1% quarter over quarter to 7.94 million in Q2 2026 (Stream Hatchet and Streamlabs, Q2 2026 Live Streaming Report).
- Twitch hours watched reached 4.51 billion in Q3 2026, up 4% on Q2 (Streams Charts, Q3 2026 Global Livestreaming Landscape).
- Gaming made up 76.9% of Twitch watch time in Q3 2026 (Streams Charts, Q3 2026 Global Livestreaming Landscape).
- 246 million people worldwide were online video content creators in 2025 (Futuresource Consulting, Video Content Creator Market Report 2025).
- Corsair’s Gamer and Creator Peripherals segment grew 3% to $116.5 million in Q3 2026 (Corsair Gaming, Q3 2026 results).
- Focusrite’s Content Creation revenue grew 11.0% to £123.0 million in the 12 months to August 31, 2025 (Focusrite plc, Interim Statement 2025).
- 66.4% of listeners picked the quiet-room recording of the same comedian as funnier than the noisy-cafe version (Gorenz and Schwarz, PLOS One 2025).
- Low-quality audio made witnesses seem less credible, reliable and trustworthy, d = 0.32 and d = 0.55 (Bild et al., Law and Human Behavior 2021).
- OBS Studio’s noise gate ships with a -32 dB close threshold and a -26 dB open threshold (OBS Project, Noise Gate Filter guide 2026).
1. How Many Twitch Streamers Exist, and How Many Are Live at Once
The gap between monthly and concurrent counts is the real shape of the Twitch streamer population. For every channel live at an average moment in October 2026, about 68 other channels went live at some point that month (6,209,186 / 91,263 = 68.0, from the table below). Most streamers are occasional broadcasters, which matters for audio: a setup that gets switched on a few times a month rarely gets tuned, and problems such as a gain level set once and never checked go unnoticed for weeks.
The longer trend points down. Stream Hatchet and Streamlabs count fewer unique broadcasting channels in 2026 than a year earlier, while the TwitchTracker monthly series shows live-channel concurrency holding between 87,738 and 92,651 in every month from April to November 2026. Fewer people are trying Twitch, but the core that streams regularly is roughly stable.

| Active Twitch streamers (channels that went live at least once in the month), October 2026 | 6,209,186 (estimate) | TwitchTracker, Twitch Statistics 2026 |
| Average number of Twitch channels live at the same moment, October 2026 | 91,263 | TwitchTracker, Twitch Statistics 2026 |
| Average number of Twitch channels live at the same moment, November 1 to 7, 2026 (partial month) | 92,651 | TwitchTracker, Twitch Statistics 2026 |
| Share of October 2026 active streamers live at an average moment | About 1.47% (91,263 / 6,209,186) | TwitchTracker, Twitch Statistics 2026 (our calculation) |
| Highest monthly active-streamer estimate between April and October 2026 | 6,734,353 (August 2026) | TwitchTracker, Twitch Statistics 2026 |

| Unique Twitch channels that broadcast, Q2 2026 | 7.94 million (down 9.1% from Q1 2026) | Stream Hatchet and Streamlabs, Q2 2026 Live Streaming Report |
Context note: TwitchTracker states that its active-streamer figures are estimates and may differ significantly from actual values. The quarterly report counts unique channels per quarter, so its totals are larger than any single month’s count and the two series should not be compared directly.
2. Watch Time and the Audience Each Channel Actually Gets
Twitch is no longer shrinking every quarter, but it is a smaller slice of a bigger market. Twitch’s share of the hours watched across all tracked livestreaming platforms was 14.2% in Q3 2026, even as its own hours grew 4% (Streams Charts, Q3 2026 Global Livestreaming Landscape). Kick is closing the gap: Twitch’s watch time fell from about 2.8 times Kick’s in Q2 to about 2.2 times in Q3.
The per-channel number is the one that frames audio decisions. An average Twitch channel had about 22.6 concurrent viewers in Q2 2026, according to the Stream Hatchet and Streamlabs Q2 2026 report, and the October 2026 monthly figures give a similar ratio (2,189,650 viewers / 91,263 live channels = 24.0). A typical stream is a small room where every listener hears the fan noise, the keyboard and the clipping, not a stadium where production flaws disappear in the crowd.

Context note: the Twitch State of Gaming 2026 release covers an eight-month window, not a calendar year, so it cannot be set against the quarterly figures above without double counting.
3. Who Buys Creator Gear: The Market Behind the Streamers
None of the figures in this section are specific to Twitch: they describe content creators in general, of whom livestreamers are one group. That wider base still matters, because Twitch streamers buy from the same shelves as podcasters and video creators. There were an estimated 246 million online video content creators worldwide in 2025, and nearly half of them considered buying new equipment in the previous 12 months (Futuresource Consulting, Video Content Creator Market Report 2025).
The spending has moved into homes. The home studio segment took 55.3% of all studio and broadcast equipment revenue in 2025 (Futuresource Consulting, Content Creator Survey and Sizing Report 2025). On Twitch itself, the only systematic look at setups we could find is older: in a Tampere University study of 100 popular English-speaking streamers, every one used a microphone, while 14% did not use a webcam (Tampere University, 2019). The camera is optional; the microphone is not.

| Online video content creators worldwide, 2025 | 246 million | Futuresource Consulting, Video Content Creator Market Report 2025 |
| Online video content creators who considered buying new equipment in the past 12 months | Nearly half | Futuresource Consulting, Video Content Creator Market Report 2025 |

| Popular English-speaking Twitch streamers in the sample who used a microphone | 100 of 100 (all) (most recent available data: 2019) | Tampere University, Gamification Research Group, 2019 |
| Popular English-speaking Twitch streamers in the sample who did not use a webcam | 14% (most recent available data: 2019) | Tampere University, Gamification Research Group, 2019 |
Context note: the Shure release, which reports the 45% figure, describes a study commissioned by Shure and gives no sample size. The Tampere sample was 85 men, 11 women and 4 groups, chosen by follower count at the time.
4. Headsets, Microphones and Audio Interfaces: What the Sales Data Shows
The gear market behind streaming is growing, but in single digits. Logitech’s headset sales rose 6% to $46.05 million in the quarter ended September 30, 2026, while its webcam sales fell 9% (Logitech, Q2 Fiscal Year 2027 Results). Audio is holding up better than video hardware, which fits a world where the microphone is mandatory and the camera is not (see section 3).
Corsair, which owns the Elgato creator brand, reported 3% growth in its Gamer and Creator Peripherals segment in Q3 2026 and said Elgato entered mobile streaming with its first wireless microphone (Corsair Gaming, Q3 2026 results, Form 8-K exhibit). On the interface side, Focusrite grew Content Creation revenue by 11.0% while noting that industry data showed the audio interface category itself declining about 1% (Focusrite plc, Interim Statement for the 12 months to August 31, 2025). Brands are taking share in a flat category, not riding a wave.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming audio units shipped worldwide, 2025 | 42.7 million (up 3.9% year over year) | Futuresource Consulting, Global Gaming Audio Report 2026 |
| Logitech headset net sales, quarter ended September 30, 2026 | $46.05 million (up 6% year over year) | Logitech, Q2 Fiscal Year 2027 Results |
| Logitech webcam net sales, quarter ended September 30, 2026 | $75.65 million (down 9% year over year) | Logitech, Q2 Fiscal Year 2027 Results |
| Corsair Gamer and Creator Peripherals segment revenue, Q3 2026 | $116.5 million (up 3% year over year) | Corsair Gaming, Q3 2026 results (Form 8-K, November 5, 2026) |
| Corsair Gamer and Creator Peripherals segment gross margin, Q3 2026 | 38.7% | Corsair Gaming, Q3 2026 results (Form 8-K, November 5, 2026) |
| Focusrite Content Creation revenue, 12 months to August 31, 2025 | £123.0 million (up 11.0%; up 14.0% at organic constant currency) | Focusrite plc, Interim Statement 2025 |
| Audio interface product category, industry-wide, 2025 compared with 2024 | Decline of approximately 1% (industry data cited by Focusrite) | Focusrite plc, Interim Statement 2025 |
| Focusrite Scarlett audio interface registrations, year to August 2025 compared with the previous year | Closely mirrored the previous year (company’s own registration data) | Focusrite plc, Interim Statement 2025 |
Data gap: we found no public, methodologically disclosed dataset on how many Twitch streamers use USB microphones versus XLR microphones (the professional three-pin connector that needs an audio interface or mixer). Figures on that split that circulate online could not be traced to a primary survey, so we left them out. Corsair’s and Logitech’s segments also include products well beyond audio, so they are signals, not audio market sizes.
5. What Bad Audio Costs a Creator: The Experimental Evidence
No study we found measures Twitch viewers leaving a stream because of bad audio, so this section relies on controlled experiments about audio quality in general. Their finding is consistent: the same words, jokes or evidence are judged worse when they are harder to hear. In two experiments, 66.4% and 69.4% of listeners picked the quiet-room recording of the same comedian as funnier than the version with noisy-cafe acoustics (Gorenz and Schwarz, PLOS One 2025).
The effect reaches beyond entertainment. When witnesses were heard through low-quality audio, listeners rated them as less credible, remembered key facts less well and gave their evidence less weight (Bild et al., Law and Human Behavior 2021). Identical conference talks and radio interviews were also rated less favorably, along with the researcher, when the audio was poor (Newman and Schwarz, Science Communication 2018). Psychologists call this processing fluency: content that takes effort to hear feels worse, even when nothing about it has changed. Background noise is the usual culprit, which is why the latency costs of real-time cleanup are worth knowing; see our neural noise suppression and AI voice isolation latency statistics.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Listeners who chose the quiet-room recording of the same comedian as funnier than the noisy-cafe version, Experiment 1 | 66.4% (the other 33.6% chose the noisy version; final N = 214) | Gorenz and Schwarz, PLOS One 2025 |
| Same forced choice, Experiment 2 | 69.4% (final N = 108) | Gorenz and Schwarz, PLOS One 2025 |
| Funniness ratings of the comedian, quiet recording vs noisy-cafe recording, Experiment 2 | M = 3.48 vs M = 2.67 (t paired(107) = 4.58, p < .001; d rm = 0.56) | Gorenz and Schwarz, PLOS One 2025 |
| Rated ease of listening, noisy-cafe clip vs quiet clip, Experiment 2 | M = 46.1 vs M = 83.6 | Gorenz and Schwarz, PLOS One 2025 |
| Participants across three experiments on witness testimony heard in high- or low-quality audio | Total N = 593 | Bild et al., Law and Human Behavior 2021 |
| Effect of low-quality audio on how credible, reliable and trustworthy witnesses seemed | Experiment 1, d = 0.32; Experiment 3, d = 0.55 | Bild et al., Law and Human Behavior 2021 |
| Effect of low-quality audio on listeners’ memory for key facts from the witness | Experiment 2, d = 0.44 (poorer memory) | Bild et al., Law and Human Behavior 2021 |
| Experiments in which identical research talks or interviews were rated less favorably with low-quality audio | 2 of 2 (a conference talk and a radio interview) | Newman and Schwarz, Science Communication 2018 |
Context note: the comedy experiments used university students from a psychology subject pool, and the witness studies used courtroom material. Both measure judgment of content, not viewer retention on a live platform, so they show why bad audio hurts, not how many viewers it costs.
6. OBS Studio: The Free Software Behind the Mix and Its Audio Defaults
Most streamer audio chains end in software, and the best-known open-source option is OBS Studio. The OBS Studio 33.0.0 Windows x64 installer, released October 23, 2026, had been downloaded 280,801 times from GitHub by November 7, 2026, against 15,956 for the Apple-silicon macOS build (OBS Project, OBS Studio repository on GitHub). On GitHub at least, the streaming desk is overwhelmingly a Windows desk.
The defaults matter because many streamers never change them. The OBS noise gate opens at -26 dB and closes at -32 dB, and the compressor starts at a 10:1 ratio with a -18 dB threshold, according to the OBS Project knowledge base. A gate tuned for one room can chop words in a louder one, so the project’s own advice is to set the close threshold above the noise level and the open threshold slightly below the voice. The encoder side of the chain is covered in our livestream audio bitrate and encoding settings statistics, and voice effects added inside the same scene setup are explained on our OBS voice changer page.

| OBS-documented settings for ducking game or music audio under the microphone (sidechain compression) | Ratio 32:1, threshold -36 dB, attack 100 ms, release 600 ms | OBS Project, Compressor Filter guide 2026 |
| GitHub downloads of the OBS Studio 33.0.0 Windows x64 installer by November 7, 2026 | 280,801 (vs 15,956 for the Apple-silicon macOS build) | OBS Project, GitHub releases 2026 |
| OBS Project funding on Open Collective | 2,263 contributors; estimated annual budget $95,680.87 | OBS Project, Open Collective page (November 2026) |
Context note: GitHub counts only downloads of the release files hosted on GitHub. OBS Studio is also distributed through other channels such as Steam, so these figures are a floor, not a user count.

Methodology and Sources
We collected roughly 70 raw figures from the sources below and kept the ones we could read on the primary page during research. Figures that appeared only in search snippets or on sites that do not name their source (including several circulating claims about USB versus XLR usage and audience retention by microphone type) were dropped. Ratios marked “our calculation” show their math in the table.

- Data watch: Twitch’s share of hours watched differs by tracker (14.2% in Q3 2026 at Streams Charts, 21.0% in Q2 2026 at Stream Hatchet and Streamlabs) because the two firms track different sets of platforms; neither is wrong, but they cannot be mixed. Streams Charts puts Twitch at 4.51 billion hours in Q3 2026, up 4% on its own Q2 figure, which implies a Q2 base of about 4.34 billion (4.51 / 1.04), while Stream Hatchet reports 4.52 billion for Q2, so the trackers’ absolute levels also differ. TwitchTracker’s active-streamer counts are its own estimates. Futuresource’s gaming audio outlook was revised between editions: the July 2025 edition projected more than 54 million units by 2029, the July 2026 edition 52.8 million by 2030. The Tampere (2019) and Shure and Futuresource (2021) creator figures are older than three years and are the most recent available data we found on those questions. Corsair’s and Logitech’s segments mix audio with non-audio products. No public primary dataset on USB versus XLR microphone use by Twitch streamers was found. OBS GitHub download counts rise daily and exclude other distribution channels.
