An estimated 50 million people cannot communicate effectively without communication aids, yet only about 2% of the roughly 2 million people diagnosed each year with that need are assessed and receive help (Dynavox Group, Annual Report 2025). The broader research definition is even larger: 97 million people worldwide cannot rely on speech alone to be heard and understood (Beukelman and Light 2020, as cited in Light et al., Augmentative and Alternative Communication 2025). Tablets and symbol apps have made high-tech AAC cheaper and more familiar, but the funding system still treats a general-purpose tablet as a non-medical item (CMS National Coverage Determination 50.1). Meanwhile, 1 in 31 US 8-year-olds has an autism diagnosis (CDC ADDM Network 2025), the population most often studied in AAC app research. We aggregated data from the CDC, CMS, WHO, NIDCD, Dynavox Group’s annual and quarterly filings, AssistiveWare, The Business Research Company, and more than a dozen peer-reviewed studies; for the hardware side of the story, see our AAC device statistics.
TL;DR
- About 50 million people cannot communicate effectively without communication aids (Dynavox Group Annual Report 2025).
- Only about 2% of people newly diagnosed each year with a need for communication aids are assessed and receive help (Dynavox Group Annual Report 2025).
- 1 in 31 US 8-year-olds (32.2 per 1,000) has autism, and 39.6% of those with cognitive data have an intellectual disability (CDC MMWR ADDM 2025).
- Roughly one-third of autistic individuals remain minimally verbal (Autism Research 2024, n = 1,579).
- AssistiveWare reports 500,000+ AAC app downloads in 140 countries (AssistiveWare 2026).
- The AAC devices market is sized at 2.58 billion dollars in 2026, heading to 3.97 billion dollars by 2030 (The Business Research Company 2026).
- Dynavox Group revenue grew 34% in local currency in 2025 to SEK 2,467 million, with 76% from North America (Dynavox Group Annual Report 2025).
- About 90% of Dynavox revenue is paid by public and private payers (Dynavox Group Annual Report 2025).
- Medicare generally does not treat computers and tablets as durable medical equipment (CMS NCD 50.1, 2015).
- Adding aided AAC lifted single-case effect sizes from Tau-U 0.74 to 0.85 in naturalistic autism interventions (Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders 2025).
- Only 6.3% of early intervention SLPs were extremely likely to recommend an iPad or speech-generating device for children not yet saying words, versus 65.5% for sign language (Lorang et al. 2022).
- 74% of surveyed US SLPs felt unprepared to provide AAC services (ATIA 2019, as cited by Holyfield et al. 2025).
1. Who Needs AAC Apps: The Demand Pool
The headline numbers disagree by almost half, and that is informative rather than a flaw. The 97 million figure counts everyone who cannot rely on speech alone, while the 50 million figure from Dynavox Group counts people who cannot communicate effectively without an aid. Either way, the gap between need and service is the real story: only about 2% of people newly diagnosed each year are assessed and receive help (Dynavox Group, Annual Report 2025).
Autism drives most of the pediatric demand for symbol apps. The CDC’s 2025 ADDM surveillance report puts prevalence at 1 in 31 eight-year-olds, and research samples consistently show a large minimally verbal subgroup. Adult demand comes from acquired conditions: aphasia after stroke and progressive diseases such as ALS, where people reach for communication aids roughly two years after symptom onset.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| People who cannot rely on speech alone to be understood | 97 million worldwide | Beukelman and Light 2020, cited in Light et al., Augmentative and Alternative Communication 2025 |
| People who cannot communicate effectively without communication aids | 50 million | Dynavox Group Annual Report 2025 |
| People diagnosed each year with a need for communication aids | 2 million | Dynavox Group Annual Report 2025 |
| Share of those diagnosed each year who are assessed and receive help | about 2% | Dynavox Group Annual Report 2025 |
| Autism prevalence, US 8-year-olds (2022 surveillance year) | 32.2 per 1,000 (1 in 31) | CDC MMWR ADDM Network 2025 |
| Autistic 8-year-olds with an intellectual disability (of those with cognitive data) | 39.6% | CDC MMWR ADDM Network 2025 |
| Autistic individuals who remain minimally verbal | approximately one-third | Autism Research 2024 (n = 1,579 minimally verbal youth) |
| Americans currently living with aphasia | about 2 million (nearly 180,000 new cases per year) | NIDCD Quick Statistics |
Context: in a 2026 Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry study of 119 autistic children aged 2 to 6, 53% were considered minimally verbal, a reminder that the share is much higher in early childhood samples than in school-age estimates. For ALS, a multinational survey of neurologists covering 1,003 patients found a mean of 24.6 months from symptom onset to communication aid use and 29.7 months to eye gaze technology use (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Frontotemporal Degeneration 2024). NIDCD data are older (most recent available: NIDCD, sources dated 1997 to 2016). For how early language delays have shifted recently, see our toddler speech delay statistics.
2. The Symbol App Ecosystem: Vocabularies, Voices, and Platforms
Tablet AAC is a software business built on symbol libraries. The scale of those libraries is the moat: Tobii Dynavox’s Boardmaker contains more than 85,000 Picture Communication Symbols (Dynavox Group Annual Report 2025), and Proloquo2Go ships with 27,000+ symbols. A new entrant does not just need an app, it needs a vocabulary that clinicians already know how to teach.
The independent app makers report reach in downloads and countries rather than revenue. AssistiveWare, which released Proloquo2Go for iOS in 2009, reports 500,000+ AAC app downloads across 140 countries, with a team of 40+ people. Platform choice still splits the market: Proloquo2Go runs on iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch and Mac, while TD Snap runs on iPadOS and Windows and doubles as the software on Tobii Dynavox’s dedicated hardware.

| Lives impacted by the Avaz AAC app | 75,000+ in 50+ countries, 15+ languages | Avaz Inc. homepage 2026 |
Context: these are company-reported figures, not audited usage data, and downloads are not active users. Language coverage remains thin at the top of the market: Proloquo2Go supports 4 languages (English, Spanish, French, Dutch). Mainstream platforms are also moving into the space: Apple’s Live Speech lets iPhone, iPad and Mac users type and have text spoken during calls, and Personal Voice builds a synthetic voice from 15 minutes of recorded prompts (Apple Newsroom, May 2023). Our synthetic voice and screen reader statistics cover the voice quality side.
3. Market Size and Vendor Economics
The market estimate and the leading vendor’s books tell a consistent growth story. The Business Research Company projects an 11.3% CAGR from 2026 to 2030, while Dynavox Group grew 34% in local currency in 2025, with 32% organic growth, so the largest listed player is currently outgrowing the analyst forecast through acquisitions in France, Germany and Italy.
Profitability is improving as well. In Q2 2026, Dynavox reported a 70% gross margin and a 15.7% EBIT margin, up from 7.4% a year earlier (Dynavox Group Interim Report Q2 2026). The product mix matters for app users: 72% of new Dynavox solutions delivered in 2025 were eye tracking and 28% touch, which suggests the company’s growth is concentrated in the high-need segment where a consumer tablet is least likely to be enough.

| New Dynavox solutions delivered by access method, 2025 | eye tracking 72%, touch 28% | Dynavox Group Annual Report 2025 |
Context: Dynavox delivered 28% more solutions in 2025 than in 2024 and employed 1,063 people at year end (Dynavox Group Annual Report 2025). Its Australia and New Zealand business, acquired in 2024, grew 117% in 2025.
4. Funding, Coverage, and Who Pays
Funding policy explains why tablet apps and dedicated devices coexist. Medicare’s rule draws a hard line: “Computers and tablets are generally not considered DME because they are useful in the absence of an illness or injury,” although speech-generating software can be covered (CMS NCD 50.1 Speech Generating Devices). Families who choose an off-the-shelf iPad plus an app often pay out of pocket, while insurers fund dedicated hardware.
The vendor side confirms how payer-driven this market is. About 90% of Dynavox revenue comes from public and private payers, and the company grew its payer contracts from 600 to more than 675 in 2025. Globally, the WHO’s assistive technology data show that the access gap is primarily an income gap, not a technology gap. Our assistive technology funding statistics go deeper on subsidies and out-of-pocket costs.

| Access to needed assistive products, low- vs high-income countries | as few as 3% vs 90% | WHO Assistive Technology Fact Sheet |
Context: the German return-on-investment figures are from a study presented by the vendor in its annual report, so treat them as industry-commissioned evidence. Medicare also excludes non-speech features (document creation, gaming, video conferencing) from coverage, which is why funded devices often ship with those functions locked. For students, school districts fund much of this through IEPs; see our special education identification statistics.
5. Clinical Evidence for Tablet and Speech-Generating AAC
The research base has moved past the old fear that AAC slows speech. A 2025 meta-analysis of 29 studies and 517 participants found single-case effects rose from Tau-U = 0.74 (large) to 0.85 (very large) when aided AAC was added to naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions, with comparative group studies showing Cohen’s d from 0.29 to 0.62 for adding AAC (Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders 2025). An analysis of 45 toddlers from two randomized controlled trials with developmental delay found no significant difference in speech sound accuracy between augmented and spoken-only interventions, while the AAC groups produced more spoken target words (American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology 2021).
The weakness is scope. Most studies still teach children to request items. A 2026 systematic review of 69 papers on AAC for autistic people concluded the focus is still on requesting, with little attention to adults or quality of life (International Journal of Language and Communication Disorders 2026).

| Studies and participants in NDBI plus AAC meta-analysis | 29 studies, 517 participants | Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders 2025 |
| Single-case effect, NDBI with aided AAC vs without | Tau-U 0.85 vs 0.74 | Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders 2025 |

| SGD vs picture exchange for requesting | no differences (19 single-case studies, 66 participants, mean age 4.9) | Pak et al., American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology 2023 |
| Participants preferring SGD vs picture exchange (developmental disabilities) | 67% vs 33% | Crowe et al., Journal of Developmental and Physical Disabilities 2022 (mega-review of 84 reviews) |
| Reviews in the mega-review naming iPad or iPod as the SGD | 7 of 84 | Crowe et al., Journal of Developmental and Physical Disabilities 2022 |
| Preschoolers in AAC Generative Language Intervention RCT | 40 children, 28 play-based sessions | Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research 2026 |
| AAC papers on autistic people in latest systematic review | 69 | Mifsud et al., International Journal of Language and Communication Disorders 2026 |
Context: the Pak et al. meta-analysis (doi:10.1044/2022_ajslp-22-00220) also found children learned to request more successfully with SGDs than with manual sign. The Crowe et al. mega-review covers literature from 1999 to 2020, so it predates most current app versions. The Therrien et al. 2025 review spans studies published 1998 to 2023.
6. Clinician Practice, Readiness, and Access Gaps
The bottleneck is people, not tablets. Only 6.3% of 376 early intervention SLPs said they were extremely likely to recommend an iPad or speech-generating device for children not yet saying words consistently, versus 65.5% for sign language and 42.0% for photographs (Lorang et al., Augmentative and Alternative Communication 2022). The very group the clinical evidence favors is least likely to get high-tech AAC early.
Preparation explains part of it. About 74% of roughly 500 US SLPs surveyed by ATIA in 2019 did not feel adequately prepared to provide AAC services, and Dynavox estimates that only about 5 to 10% of US prescribers currently work with assistive communication. Holyfield et al. (2025) also cite evidence that Black preschool children receive significantly less AAC intervention per week than their white peers.

| Early intervention SLPs extremely likely to recommend iPad or SGD (children not yet saying words) | 6.3% (sign language: 65.5%) | Lorang et al., Augmentative and Alternative Communication 2022 (n = 376, 47 states) |
| Top barrier reported by early intervention SLPs | caregiver buy-in 39.1%, carryover across providers 27.3% | Lorang et al., Augmentative and Alternative Communication 2022 |

| US prescribers working with assistive communication | about 5 to 10% | Dynavox Group Annual Report 2025 |
| Professionals prescribing 4+ Dynavox solutions per year | about 1,200 (up more than 40% since 2024) | Dynavox Group Annual Report 2025 |
| School-aged children with highly unintelligible speech never seen by an AAC professional (New Mexico) | 78% | Binger et al. 2021, cited in Light et al., Augmentative and Alternative Communication 2025 |
| SLPs using high-tech AAC for aphasia, USA vs India | 70% vs 58% | Kidwai et al., Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology 2024 |
| AAC users abandoning their systems within 12 months | as many as 60% | Johnson et al. 2006, cited in Holyfield et al. 2025 |
Context: the abandonment figure is old (most recent available: Johnson et al., 2006) and predates the tablet era, so it should not be read as a current app churn rate. Social participation remains low: in one study only 3% of school interactions involved children using AAC with peers, and 35% never interacted with peers (Andzik et al. 2016, cited in Light et al. 2025). Training demand is visible too: 283 SLPs surveyed on AAC telepractice mostly wanted more training and resources (Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools 2022), and the Kidwai survey (doi:10.1080/17483107.2022.2109072) found affordability for clients mattered more to clinicians in India than in the US.

- Data watch: need estimates conflict (97 million in the research literature vs 50 million in Dynavox’s investor materials) because they use different definitions; we report both and do not reconcile them. Only one third-party market estimate could be read (The Business Research Company); Grand View Research returned 403 and several other firms’ report pages were unavailable, so the market size is not cross-validated, and Dynavox’s own 2025 revenue alone is a meaningful share of that estimate. App figures (downloads, lives impacted) are self-reported by vendors and are not active-user counts. The ATIA 2019 survey, Binger 2021, Andzik 2016 and Johnson 2006 figures are cited through peer-reviewed papers rather than read in the original; the 60% abandonment estimate (2006) and NIDCD prevalence figures are older than three years. The German return-on-investment figures come from a vendor-presented study. ASHA’s AAC Practice Portal could not be accessed (403) and was not used.
