Wi-Fi Alliance expects 1.1 billion Wi-Fi 7 devices to ship in 2026, close to double the 583.2 million it projected for 2025, yet Ookla’s Speedtest data shows Wi-Fi 7 carried only 1.8% of global Wi-Fi samples in Q1 2026. The gap between shipments and usage is the story of this standard. In offices the switch is already done: Wi-Fi 7 took 53.0% of enterprise access point revenue in Q2 2026 (IDC Worldwide WLAN Tracker). In homes the retail router market is still shrinking, while ISPs push Wi-Fi 7 gateways into homes on their own schedule. For the wider home networking picture, see our Wi-Fi router statistics. We aggregated data from Wi-Fi Alliance, IDC, Dell’Oro Group, Counterpoint Research, ABI Research, Ookla, the FCC, the EU Radio Spectrum Policy Group, India’s Department of Telecommunications and other primary sources listed in the methodology.
TL;DR
- 1.1 billion Wi-Fi 7 devices forecast to ship in 2026 (Wi-Fi Alliance, January 2026).

1. Device Shipments: From 233 Million to 1.1 Billion in Three Years
Wi-Fi 7 is ramping faster than any Wi-Fi generation before it, and the forecasts keep moving up. When Wi-Fi Alliance launched Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 in January 2024, it cited IDC’s expectation of 233 million Wi-Fi 7 devices in 2024 and 2.1 billion by 2028. By July 2025 the Alliance’s Wi-Fi momentum update projected 583.2 million Wi-Fi 7 devices for 2025, and in January 2026 it raised the bar to 1.1 billion Wi-Fi 7 devices shipping in 2026 (Network World, January 2026).
The composition matters more than the total. Phones and laptops get Wi-Fi 7 automatically when the chipset refreshes, so most of the billion are client devices that will spend years talking to Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 routers. Counterpoint Research found Wi-Fi 7 smartphones were one-fourth of global smartphone shipments in Q3 2025, a threefold jump year over year (Counterpoint Research, December 2025), with premium phones such as the iPhone 16 series leading. The client side is ahead; the router side is the bottleneck.

| Wi-Fi 7 share of smartphone shipments, Q3 2025 | About one-fourth (3x year over year) | Counterpoint Research, December 2025 |
Context note: the 2025 and 2026 figures are forecasts made during or before the year, not audited shipment counts. Wi-Fi Alliance also estimates 23.3 billion Wi-Fi devices in use, so even 1.1 billion Wi-Fi 7 units in a year is under 5% of the active base (1.1 / 23.3 = 4.7%).
2. Enterprise Access Points: Wi-Fi 7 Is Now the Default Purchase
In the enterprise, the debate is over. Wi-Fi 7 generated 1.4 billion dollars, or 53.0% of enterprise dependent access point revenue, in Q2 2026, up 219.5% year over year (IDC Worldwide WLAN Tracker, 2Q26). Two years earlier the share was in single digits: IDC recorded 10.25% in 4Q24, 11.8% in 1Q25, 39.7% in 4Q25 and 44.5% in 1Q26. Wi-Fi 6 fell to 29.4% of the segment in Q2 2026. That is a full generational handover in about six quarters.
The market is growing too, not just changing mix. IDC’s enterprise WLAN market reached 3.2 billion dollars in Q2 2026, up 23.2%, after 10.5 billion dollars for full-year 2025 (+11.4%). Dell’Oro Group, which counts units, reported a record of more than 10 million access points shipped in Q2 2026, with Wi-Fi 7 over half the market (Dell’Oro Group, September 2026). Part of that surge is pull-forward: enterprises ordered early because memory shortages from the AI build-out are pushing access point prices up through 2026.

| Wi-Fi 7 share of enterprise WLAN units, 1Q25 | 12% | Dell’Oro Group via The Fast Mode, June 2025 |
Context note: IDC measures revenue for dependent (controller-managed) access points, while Dell’Oro measures units of indoor APs, so the 53% and ‘over half’ figures are close but not interchangeable. Dell’Oro’s June 2026 release put unit adoption at only 37% one quarter earlier, a reminder that revenue shares run ahead of unit shares when Wi-Fi 7 sells at a premium.
3. Access Point Forecasts, Vendors and Regions
Unit forecasts point to a tripling in two years. ABI Research figures cited by the Wireless Broadband Alliance put Wi-Fi 7 access point shipments at 26.3 million in 2024, 66.5 million in 2025 and 117.9 million in 2026 (Network World, January 2026). Wi-Fi Alliance’s own 2025 projection was higher, at 98.7 million Wi-Fi 7 networking access points, a sign of how much definitions (enterprise only vs all access points and gateways) move these numbers. Dell’Oro’s January 2026 forecast expects Wi-Fi 7 adoption above 90% of the market, peaking in 2029, a level not seen since Wi-Fi 4 in 2013.
Vendor share has barely moved through the transition. Cisco held 39.0% of the enterprise WLAN market in Q2 2026 with 1.3 billion dollars in revenue, and Dell’Oro says it narrowly led Wi-Fi 7 indoor AP revenue in 2025 ahead of Huawei. The fastest-growing large vendor was Huawei, up 44.0% year over year in Q2 2026, followed by Ubiquiti at +33.1%. Regionally, EMEA led growth at +32.2%, while the Americas stayed the largest market at 1.5 billion dollars.

| Regional revenue, Q2 2026 | Americas 1.5B (+21.6%), EMEA 1.0B (+32.2%), APJ 708.1M (+15.2%) | IDC, 2Q26 |
Context note: the ABI Research 2025 and 2026 values are forecasts relayed by WBA’s chief executive to Network World; ABI’s underlying chart data is paywalled. Dell’Oro expects the first Wi-Fi 8 revenue as early as 2027, which will start to cap Wi-Fi 7’s share later in the decade.
4. Home Routers: Retail Shrinks While ISP Gateways Surge
Consumer Wi-Fi 7 adoption is being decided by internet providers, not shoppers. Global retail Wi-Fi router shipments fell 6% year over year in Q1 2026, after four straight years of decline that leave the market about 34% below its 2021 peak (Counterpoint Research, July 2026). Counterpoint’s explanation is blunt: ISP-provided hardware meets the needs of most customers. TP-Link and Xiaomi still account for nearly a third of retail shipments, and only ASUS, Google and Amazon’s eero grew in the quarter, helped by mesh systems and gaming routers. Our mesh Wi-Fi statistics track that segment in more detail.
The ISP channel tells the opposite story. Dell’Oro reported that residential Wi-Fi 7 router shipments grew 211% in 2025 (Dell’Oro Group, March 2026), and that spending on residential Wi-Fi 7 routers and broadband CPE with WLAN rose 124% year over year in 3Q25, with most of the volume coming from cheaper dual-band Wi-Fi 7 units in China and other lower-ARPU markets. That is why the ‘Wi-Fi 7 router’ in most homes will be a fiber or cable gateway, often without the 6 GHz radio that makes the standard fast. Fiber rollouts are the main trigger, as our fiber broadband statistics show.

| Total WLAN equipment shipments | 294.1M (2024) to 422.3M (2030), +43.6% | ABI Research |
Context note: the Dell’Oro 2024 to 2028 home forecast (gateways, routers and mesh satellites) is older and predates the 211% growth reported for 2025; treat it as a baseline. ABI Research’s WLAN equipment outlook attributes most future growth to emerging economies, with Rest of Asia-Pacific forecast at a 15.9% CAGR versus 3% for mainland China.
5. Real-World Use and Speed: What Speedtest Data Shows
Shipments measure boxes; Ookla measures connections, and the gap is wide. Wi-Fi 7 accounted for just 1.8% of global Wi-Fi samples from Android devices in Q1 2026, according to Ookla’s Global State of Wi-Fi 2026 analysis (TelecomLead). The global network is still mostly older: Wi-Fi 5 held about 39% and Wi-Fi 4 about 34% of samples, and Wi-Fi 6 only reached 26.7% after four years of growth from 6% in Q1 2022 (Advanced Television).
The leaders are markets where operators bundle Wi-Fi 7 with multi-gig plans. Singapore hit 25.1% Wi-Fi 7 share, which Ookla links to telco bundling of Wi-Fi 7 routers with 10 Gbps plans, followed by China at 7.5% and North America at 6.8% (Telecoms Tech News). When Wi-Fi 7 is in place, the speed gain is real: Ookla’s 2025 US analysis found median downloads of 600 to 800 Mbps, about 2x Wi-Fi 6 and 4x Wi-Fi 5 (Ookla via Yahoo Tech, June 2025). The router is often the limit on a gigabit line, a theme in our internet speed statistics.

| US Wi-Fi 7 share of Speedtest users, 2025 | 1.8% (under 1% through all of 2024) | Ookla, June 2025 |
Context note: Ookla’s samples come from Android devices running Speedtest, so iPhone-heavy markets are under-represented, and a Wi-Fi 7 sample needs both a Wi-Fi 7 phone and a Wi-Fi 7 router. Ookla also projects Wi-Fi 7 will reach 13.8% of the installed base by 2030, from 3.6% in 2025.
6. Spectrum and Standards: The 6 GHz Question
Wi-Fi 7’s headline feature, 320 MHz channels, only exists where regulators open the 6 GHz band, and the map is split. In the US the FCC made 1,200 MHz (5.925 to 7.125 GHz) available for unlicensed use in 2020, approved seven automated frequency coordination systems for standard-power access points in February 2024 (RCR Wireless), and in January 2026 circulated an order for geofenced variable power devices at up to 24 dBm EIRP for access points. The payoff shows in usage: North America’s 6 GHz share of Wi-Fi samples rose from 2.2% in Q1 2024 to 13.8% in Q1 2026, a sixfold jump, while Europe sat at 1.6% (Ookla, 2026).
Elsewhere the band is contested. RCR Wireless counted 97 countries with full or partial 6 GHz Wi-Fi access in December 2025. India’s Department of Telecommunications delicensed 500 MHz of the lower band (5,925 to 6,425 MHz) in January 2026. Europe went the other way on the upper band: the EU Radio Spectrum Policy Group recommended in November 2025 that 540 MHz go to mobile networks, with a 160 MHz guard band (6,425 to 6,585 MHz) frozen until WRC-27 (Telecompaper). European Wi-Fi 7 routers will therefore be capped at the 480 MHz lower band, which fits only one 320 MHz channel.

The standard itself arrived after the products. Wi-Fi Alliance began certifying Wi-Fi 7 on January 8, 2024, the IEEE Standards Board approved IEEE 802.11be-2024 on September 26, 2024, and the published standard followed on July 22, 2025. In January 2026 the Alliance extended Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 to 20 MHz-only devices, opening the program to the sensors and appliances covered in our smart home statistics. Wi-Fi Alliance says its 4K QAM modulation alone delivers 20% higher transmission rates than 1024 QAM, and MediaTek says that gain is what Wi-Fi 7 still offers in markets without 6 GHz.

Every figure above was read during research for this article and traced to the organization that produced it. Where a primary page blocked automated access (Ookla, ABI Research chart data), we used trade-press reports that name the original study and say so below. Market-sizing figures from SEO listicles and report resellers, including several ‘Wi-Fi 7 market’ CAGR estimates and a widely repeated ‘500 million certified Wi-Fi 7 devices’ claim without a primary document, were excluded.

- ABI Research: WLAN equipment shipments 2024 to 2030; Wi-Fi 7 AP forecast via Network World (above)
- Ookla: Global State of Wi-Fi 2026 (Q1 2026 data) as reported by TelecomLead, Telecoms Tech News and Advanced Television; US Wi-Fi 7 speeds (June 2025) via Yahoo Tech
- Regulators and standards: FCC 6 GHz fact sheet, January 2026, FCC AFC approvals via RCR Wireless and Broadband Breakfast, FCC 23-86 VLP order, 6 GHz country count (RCR Wireless), India DoT delicensing, RSPG upper 6 GHz (Telecompaper), IEEE 802.11be-2024, MediaTek comments via Wi-Fi NOW Global
- Data watch: No firm publishes a free, global count of Wi-Fi 7 home routers shipped; the consumer section combines Counterpoint’s retail tracker with Dell’Oro’s ISP-channel growth rates, which use different scopes. Wi-Fi 7 access point forecasts conflict: ABI Research (via WBA) put 2025 at 66.5 million while Wi-Fi Alliance projected 98.7 million networking access points, likely because of differing definitions. IDC (revenue, dependent APs) and Dell’Oro (units, indoor APs) both show Wi-Fi 7 passing half the enterprise market in Q2 2026, but their 1Q26 figures differ (44.5% vs 37%) for the same reason. Ookla’s Q1 2026 report was read through trade press because ookla.com blocked automated access; one outlet lists North America at 6.8% and another the US at 7.2%, and we cite 6.8% for the region. The 2.1 billion (2028) IDC forecast and the Dell’Oro home forecast date from 2024, and the 2023 FCC VLP order and 2020 band opening are older baselines (most recent available data). The FCC January 2026 GVP figures come from the draft order circulated for the January 29, 2026 meeting.
Last updated: October 3, 2026. We update this roundup quarterly, and the next refresh is expected when IDC and Dell’Oro Group publish their 3Q26 WLAN results and Counterpoint Research releases its Q2 2026 Global Retail Wi-Fi CPE tracker.
