One company, TSMC, now manufactures nearly 70% of the world’s outsourced chips. 1. Market Size: A Record Year and a Contested 2026 Forecast
The industry did not just grow in 2025 - it accelerated. The SIA’s 25.6% annual gain nearly doubled 2024’s 19.1% pace, and the fourth quarter alone ran at a $236.6 billion quarterly rate. The disagreement is about how far the run goes: the SIA framed 2026 as the year sales approach $1 trillion, while WSTS’s Spring 2026 revision put the number at $1.51 trillion - a 90% jump that assumes an extraordinary memory-pricing spike. Note the two different 2025 totals: the SIA’s $791.7 billion (three-month-moving-average sales) and Gartner’s $793 billion (vendor revenue) measure slightly different things but land within 0.2% of each other.
2. Product Segments: Logic and Memory Ran the Table
Growth was lopsided by product type. Logic overtook every other category at $301.9 billion, up 39.9%, while memory grew 34.8% to $223.1 billion - together roughly two-thirds of the entire market. The forward view is even more skewed: WSTS expects memory to grow about 250% in 2026 on high-bandwidth-memory demand, dwarfing the 37% it forecasts for logic and single-digit growth for older categories like discrete devices and sensors. 3. The Vendor Leaderboard: NVIDIA in a Class of One
Concentration at the top reached a new extreme. NVIDIA became the first chip company ever to clear $100 billion in a year, at $125.7 billion, and Gartner attributed more than 35% of the whole industry’s 2025 growth to it alone. Below NVIDIA, the memory makers surged - SK Hynix up 37.2% and Micron up 50.2% on AI-server demand - while Intel’s revenue slipped 3.9% and its share fell to 6%, down from about 12% in 2021. 4. Foundry and Geographic Concentration: One Island, One Company
Manufacturing is where the risk sits. TSMC captured roughly 69.9% of total foundry revenue in 2025, up from 64.4% a year earlier, on $122.54 billion in sales that grew 36.1% - leaving Samsung a distant second at 7.2%. On a pure-play basis TSMC’s quarterly share ran even higher, around 70 to 72%. Zoom out and the geography is starker: Taiwan produces more than 60% of the world’s outsourced chips and over 90% of the most advanced logic, a single point of failure the entire electronics supply chain depends on. 5. Equipment and Lithography: The Capex Behind the Chips
Every wafer starts with a toolset, and toolmakers had a banner year. Global semiconductor equipment billings hit a record $135.1 billion in 2025, up 15%, with Taiwan’s spend rocketing 90% to $31.5 billion on AI- and HPC-driven capacity. Asia dominates: China, Taiwan and Korea together accounted for 79% of all equipment spending, up from 74% in 2024, while Europe (-41%) and North America (-20%) fell back. 6. The Memory Supercycle: DRAM and HBM Reprice the Industry
Memory is the wild card in every 2026 forecast. DRAM revenue leapt 30.9% quarter over quarter to $41.4 billion in Q3 2025, and TrendForce projected conventional DRAM contract prices rising another 45 to 50% in Q4 - a repricing steep enough to reshape the whole industry’s revenue math. High-bandwidth memory is the pull: HBM revenue was tracking from about $35 billion in 2025 toward roughly $60 billion in 2026 (Yole Group), and AI is expected to consume around 20% of global DRAM wafer capacity by 2026. Advanced packaging is the quieter beneficiary: estimates of the 2025 market vary widely across firms (roughly $34 billion to $55 billion), reflecting different scope definitions, so treat any single figure with caution.
7. Investment, Geopolitics, and the Workforce Gap
The build-out is a policy story as much as a market one. CHIPS Act-linked private commitments have surpassed $600 billion across roughly 130 projects in 28 states, with about $33.7 billion in federal incentives awarded - the largest reshoring push in the industry’s history. SEMI counted 18 new fabs starting construction in 2025, part of 97 volume fabs launched from 2023 to 2025. But the constraint is people, not capital: Deloitte and the SIA project a shortfall of more than one million skilled workers by 2030.
