Global edtech venture funding fell 89% from its 2021 peak of $20.8 billion to just $2.4 billion in 2024, the lowest level in a decade (HolonIQ, 2024 EdTech Funding Wrap). The rebound since has been faint: HolonIQ counted $2.6 billion for 2025, while Crunchbase, using broader boundaries, tracked about $2.8 billion globally through November (Crunchbase News, Nov 2025). The wreckage is just as measurable as the boom: Byju’s went from a $22 billion valuation to insolvency proceedings (TechCrunch, 2024), and the count of edtech unicorns has shrunk from 32 at the end of 2021 to 14 in 2026 (HolonIQ). This analysis consolidates data from HolonIQ, Crunchbase, Brighteye Ventures, and 14 other primary sources to map where education technology money stands in 2026.
TL;DR
- Global edtech VC peaked at $20.8 billion across 3,000+ rounds in 2021, then fell 89% to $2.4 billion by 2024 (HolonIQ).
- 2025 stabilized at $2.6 billion, with early-stage deals making up about 87% of volume (HolonIQ).
- Funding trackers disagree on the totals: Brighteye counted $6.3 billion of global 2024 funding under a broader “Edtech 2.0” definition versus HolonIQ’s $2.4 billion (Brighteye Ventures).
- Three companies absorbed nearly half of all edtech VC raised in Q1 2025 (HolonIQ).
- Workforce training was the largest investment category in 2025 at 38% of deal volume, ahead of K-12 at 36% (HolonIQ).
- India’s edtech funding fell from $4.1 billion in 2021 to $116 million through September 2024 (Tracxn).
- China’s July 2021 tutoring ban hit a sector valued around $100 billion; TAL lost 95% of its stock value in six months (Class Central).
- The $190 billion U.S. ESSER program expired September 30, 2024, cutting more than $1,000 per student in one year (Education Resource Strategies).
- Private equity wrote 2024’s biggest checks: Nord Anglia $14.5 billion, PowerSchool $5.6 billion, Instructure $4.8 billion (HolonIQ).
- Coursera and Udemy agreed a $2.5 billion all-stock merger in December 2025 (Coursera investor relations).
- Chegg’s stock fell 99% from its 2021 peak as free AI chatbots absorbed its homework-help business (Forbes).
- Grand View Research projects the edtech market will reach $437.5 billion by 2033, at a 10.8% CAGR (Grand View Research).
1. The Boom-Bust Cycle: Global EdTech VC by Year
The 2021 numbers now read like a different industry. Edtech venture investment that year was roughly 40 times its 2010 level and about triple pre-pandemic 2019, and HolonIQ was predicting $87 billion or more in cumulative funding through 2030, against $32 billion in the entire prior decade. What followed instead was an 89% collapse to $2.4 billion in 2024, the lowest annual total in ten years (HolonIQ). One caution on all of these totals: trackers count differently. Brighteye Ventures logs $6.3 billion for 2024 because it includes a broader “Edtech 2.0” span of learning-and-work tools, so always check the definition before comparing headlines. For how this cycle compares with venture activity outside education, see our venture capital statistics.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Global edtech VC, 2021 peak | $20.8 billion, 3,000+ rounds | HolonIQ |
| Global edtech VC, 2024 | $2.4 billion, decade low | HolonIQ, 2024 EdTech Funding Wrap |
| Decline from 2021 peak to 2024 | 89% | HolonIQ, 2024 EdTech Funding Wrap |
| Global edtech VC, 2025 | $2.6 billion | HolonIQ |
| Global 2024 funding, broader “Edtech 2.0” definition | $6.3 billion, 1,153 deals | Brighteye Ventures, European Edtech Funding Report 2025 |
| Q1 2025 global funding, year over year | $410 million, down 35% | HolonIQ |
| Average deal size, Q1 2025 | $7.8 million | HolonIQ, Q1 2025 note |
| Early-stage share of 2025 deal volume | ~87% | HolonIQ, 2025 wrap |
Context: HolonIQ’s pre-bust forecast of $87 billion in 2020s funding now looks unreachable; at the 2024-2025 run rate the decade would close far below half that figure.
2. AI Rewrites the Investment Thesis
Investors did not abandon education, they narrowed to AI-enabled bets with visible revenue. In Q1 2025, just three companies, Leap Scholar, MagicSchool AI, and Campus, accounted for nearly half of all edtech venture capital raised worldwide (HolonIQ). The year’s biggest disclosed rounds cluster around AI-heavy products: Amboss in medical learning, Lingokids in early childhood, EdSights in student retention chatbots (Crunchbase News). The boundary problem is real, though: Crunchbase excludes general-purpose AI platforms from its edtech tallies, which means tools students actually use most, like ChatGPT, sit outside every one of these totals. Grammarly’s $1 billion growth financing from General Catalyst in May 2025 is a case in point, counted by some trackers and not others.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Share of Q1 2025 edtech VC taken by top 3 companies | ~50% | HolonIQ, Q1 2025 |
| Amboss (medical learning) round, March 2025 | ~$260 million | Crunchbase News |
| Lingokids round, September 2025 | $120 million | Crunchbase News, Nov 2025 |
| EdSights (AI retention chatbot) round, 2025 | $80 million | Crunchbase News, Nov 2025 |
| Speak round, December 2024 (at $1B valuation) | $78 million | TechCrunch, Dec 2024 |
| MagicSchool AI Series B, 2025 | $45 million | Crunchbase News, Nov 2025 |
| 2025 transactions above $5 million in size | ~40% | HolonIQ, 2025 wrap |
Note: healthcare education emerged as a breakout niche in 2025, with Amboss and VuMedi together raising $340 million (Reach Capital).
3. Regional Breakdown: One Downturn, Four Stories
The downturn is global but wildly uneven. North America captured just over half of global VC value in 2024 on only about a third of deal volume, meaning U.S. rounds are fewer but bigger (HolonIQ). European edtech funding fell by a third in one year, from $1.2 billion in 2023 to $0.8 billion in 2024 (Brighteye Ventures). India’s fall is steeper than anywhere outside China: from $4.1 billion in 2021 to $116 million through September 2024, a decline of more than 97% (Tracxn). The one region growing from a small base is MENA, where Q1 2025 funding jumped 169% year over year (HolonIQ). Note the tracker split on U.S. figures too: Reach Capital counts $2.9 billion of U.S. 2024 investment under its wider learning-and-work lens, more than HolonIQ’s entire global total.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| North America share of global VC value, 2024 | >50% (on ~1/3 of deals) | HolonIQ, 2024 wrap |
| U.S. edtech funding, 2025 (through November) | $1.2 billion | Crunchbase News |
| U.S. 2024 funding, broader learning definition | $2.9 billion | Reach Capital |
| European edtech funding, 2023 vs 2024 | $1.2B vs $0.8B | Brighteye Ventures |
| Europe Q4 2024 funding (vs Q1 2024) | $299 million, +71% | Brighteye Ventures |
| India edtech funding, 2021 vs 2024 (through Sept) | $4.1B vs $116M | Tracxn, EdTech India Report 2024 |
| India test-prep funding, 2021 vs 2024 YTD | $175M vs $8.5M | Tracxn |
| MENA funding growth, Q1 2025 year over year | +169% | HolonIQ, Q1 2025 note |
Outlier: Sweden and Italy entered Europe’s top five edtech markets for the first time in 2024, a sign that capital is spreading beyond the UK-France-Germany core (Brighteye Ventures).
4. The Wipeouts: China’s Crackdown and the Byju’s Collapse
Two shocks explain most of the missing billions. China’s “double reduction” policy of July 2021 banned for-profit K-12 academic tutoring in a sector valued around $100 billion, and the sell-off was immediate: TAL Education, once worth $58 billion, lost 95% of its stock value within six months, while New Oriental’s founder disclosed a 90% market cap loss, an 80% revenue drop, and 60,000 staff dismissed (Class Central). India supplied the second shock. Byju’s, the most funded edtech startup ever, slid from a $22 billion valuation into insolvency proceedings in July 2024 after auditor resignations and creditor disputes (TechCrunch). Yet India also produced the bust era’s best exit: Physics Wallah’s November 2025 IPO closed its first day up 44% at roughly a $5 billion market cap. The whole arc, boom, ban, and rebuild, runs through tutoring economics, covered in our private tutoring market statistics.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| China for-profit tutoring sector value before July 2021 ban | ~$100 billion | Class Central, 2022 |
| TAL Education stock decline in 6 months post-ban | -95% (from $58B peak cap) | Class Central, 2022 |
| New Oriental market cap / revenue decline, 2021 | -90% / -80% | Founder statements, via Class Central |
| New Oriental refund and severance outlay | >20 billion RMB (~$3.1B) | Founder statements, via Class Central |
| Byju’s peak valuation (2022) vs 2024 status | $22 billion vs insolvency | TechCrunch, Jul 2024 |
| BlackRock markdown of Byju’s stake | ~95% | CNBC, Mar 2024 |
| Physics Wallah IPO proceeds, Nov 2025 | ~$393 million | TechCrunch, Nov 2025 |
| Physics Wallah day-one close vs last private valuation | ~$5B vs $2.8B | TechCrunch, Nov 2025 |
Note: Physics Wallah’s FY2025 revenue grew 49% to roughly $326 million while its net loss narrowed by about four-fifths, the profile public investors rewarded (TechCrunch).
5. The ESSER Cliff and the K-12 Buyer Squeeze
The demand side of U.S. edtech shrank on a fixed calendar. ESSER, the $190 billion federal pandemic relief program for K-12 schools, hit its final spending deadline on September 30, 2024. Education Resource Strategies puts the loss at more than $1,000 per student in a single year, and McKinsey projects average district budget declines of 5 to 8 percent with no offsetting state or local increase. The program had fueled an estimated $23 billion increase in vendor spending, so its end lands directly on edtech sellers: 60% of district leaders told McKinsey they may consolidate vendor contracts. Investors saw it coming, which is why workforce training passed K-12 as the largest funding category in 2025 (HolonIQ), a shift we track from the buyer side in our corporate training statistics.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Total ESSER K-12 relief allocated | $190 billion | McKinsey, 2024 |
| ESSER final spending deadline | September 30, 2024 | McKinsey, 2024 |
| Single-year spending reduction after expiry | >$1,000 per student | Education Resource Strategies |
| ESSER share of total revenue, by state | 4% to 17% | Education Resource Strategies |
| ESSER-fueled increase in vendor spending | ~$23 billion | McKinsey, 2024 |
| District leaders who may consolidate vendor contracts | 60% | McKinsey, 2024 |
| 2025 deal volume: workforce vs K-12 vs post-secondary | 38% vs 36% vs 22% | HolonIQ, 2025 wrap |
| U.S. states with education savings account programs | 17 states, 22M students | Reach Capital |
Context: education savings accounts are the counterweight, opening a direct-to-family channel for K-12 products just as district budgets tighten (Reach Capital).
6. Exits: M&A, Take-Privates, and the Public Market Reckoning
With IPO windows mostly shut, private equity became edtech’s exit market. HolonIQ logged roughly 342 M&A transactions worth about $28 billion in disclosed value in 2024, against just 5 IPOs, then around 410 M&A deals in 2025, up about 20%. The three largest 2024 deals alone, Nord Anglia at $14.5 billion, PowerSchool at $5.6 billion, and Instructure at $4.8 billion, total more than ten years of current-pace venture funding. Public edtech split into winners and casualties: Duolingo crossed $1 billion in annual revenue while Chegg lost 99% of its peak value and cut 45% of staff as students defected to free AI chatbots (CNBC). December 2025 brought consolidation at the top: Coursera and Udemy agreed a $2.5 billion all-stock merger. Duolingo’s outlier run gets a full breakdown in our Duolingo statistics.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| EdTech M&A, 2024 | ~342 deals, ~$28B disclosed | HolonIQ, 2024 wrap |
| EdTech M&A, 2025 (vs 2024) | ~410 deals, +20% | HolonIQ, 2025 wrap |
| Nord Anglia Education acquisition, 2024 | $14.5 billion | HolonIQ, 2024 wrap |
| PowerSchool take-private by Bain Capital, 2024 | $5.6 billion (37% premium) | Bain Capital, Jun 2024 |
| Instructure acquisition by KKR, 2024 | $4.8 billion | HolonIQ, 2024 wrap |
| Workday acquisition of Sana, 2025 | ~$1.1 billion | Workday, Sep 2025 |
| Coursera-Udemy all-stock merger value, Dec 2025 | ~$2.5 billion | Coursera investor relations |
| Coursera-Udemy pro forma annual revenue | >$1.5 billion | Coursera investor relations |
| Duolingo revenue, 2025 | $1.04 billion, +39% | Duolingo, FY2025 annual report |
| Chegg stock decline from Feb 2021 peak | -99% (~$14.7B to ~$156M cap) | Forbes, Oct 2025 |
Note: Chegg’s Q1 2025 alone showed subscribers down 31% to 3.2 million and revenue down 30% to $121 million, the clearest measured case of generative AI displacing an education incumbent (Chegg results, via Higher Ed Dive).
7. Market Size Projections and the Road to 2030
Forecasts stayed bullish right through the venture bust, which tells you the analysts see spending and investment as different things. Grand View Research values the education technology market at $187.0 billion in 2025 and projects $437.5 billion by 2033, with North America holding a 36.1% share and K-12 the largest segment at 38.9% (Grand View Research). The Business Research Company projects nearly the same destination six years sooner, $445.94 billion by 2029, because its 20.0% CAGR uses a wider edtech-and-smart-classrooms definition. That 9-point CAGR spread between two reputable firms is the single best argument for reading methodology before quoting a forecast. The ceiling above all of it: HolonIQ projects total global education spending near $10 trillion by 2030.

| Global education spending projection, 2030 | ~$10 trillion (4.4% CAGR) | HolonIQ |
| EdTech unicorns, end of 2021 vs May 2026 | 32 vs 14 ($34.2B combined) | HolonIQ, unicorn tracker |
Note: HolonIQ’s $404 billion by 2025 figure was a 2020 forecast made before the bust and is shown here as a reference point for how far expectations moved, not as a current estimate.
