Camera makers shipped 9.44 million digital cameras in 2025, just 7.8% of the 121.5 million they shipped at the 2010 peak, while the average interchangeable-lens camera now leaves the factory at 104,100 yen, nearly double the 2019 figure (CIPA, Total Shipments of Digital Still Cameras, 2026). That combination of a smaller, pricier market is the backdrop for gear rental: ShareGrid lists more than 11,000 cinema cameras and 8,700 audio items from owners who rent them out, while Los Angeles on-location shoot days fell 16.1% in 2025 (FilmLA, 2025 annual report). Demand for crews is soft too, with US motion picture and sound recording employment down 5.8% year over year in September 2026 (BLS, Current Employment Statistics). For the buying side of the same equation, see our creator equipment spend statistics and the broader digital camera statistics. We aggregated data from the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA), Nikon and Canon investor and news releases, FilmLA, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the published pages of ShareGrid, Lensrentals, BorrowLenses, Hygglo and KitSplit.

- Los Angeles shoot days: 19,694 in 2025, down 16.1% from 2024 (FilmLA, Q4 2025 report).
- Q2 2026 LA shoot days fell 12.7%, but stills, documentaries and online content rose 10.0% (FilmLA, Q2 2026).
- 35% of US camera operators are self-employed (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-2035).
1. Camera Shipments: A Smaller Market Rebuilt Around Mirrorless
Rental fleets are stocked from a market that is a fraction of its former size but growing again. CIPA member companies shipped 9,438,876 digital still cameras in 2025, up 11.2% year over year, worth 880.6 billion yen (CIPA, Production and Shipment of Digital Still Cameras, January-December 2025). The low point was 2023 at 7.72 million units, so 2025 sits 22.3% above that trough (9,439 / 7,721 thousand), while still only 7.8% of the 2010 peak (9,439 / 121,463 thousand).
The mix is what matters for rental houses. Mirrorless bodies were 6,311,054 of the 7,001,965 interchangeable-lens cameras shipped, or 90.1%, and DSLR shipments fell 30.7% to 690,911 units. DSLRs that once anchored rental catalogs are now a legacy category: 2025 DSLR volume is 4.3% of the 16.2 million shipped in 2012 (691 / 16,200 thousand), according to the CIPA Report historical tables.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Digital still cameras shipped, 2025 | 9,438,876 units (+11.2%) | CIPA, January-December 2025 |
| Shipment value, 2025 | 880.6 billion yen (+6.8%) | CIPA, January-December 2025 |
| Interchangeable-lens cameras, 2025 | 7,001,965 units (+5.9%) | CIPA, January-December 2025 |
| Mirrorless cameras, 2025 | 6,311,054 units (+12.5%), 90.1% of interchangeable-lens units | CIPA, January-December 2025 |
| DSLR cameras, 2025 | 690,911 units (-30.7%) | CIPA, January-December 2025 |
| Built-in lens (compact) cameras, 2025 | 2,436,911 units (+29.6%) | CIPA, January-December 2025 |
| Peak year shipments (2010) | 121,463 thousand units | CIPA Report, 2026 |
| Shipments to the Americas, 2025 | 2,346,778 units (+12.7%) | CIPA, January-December 2025 |
Context note: CIPA figures cover member companies only, including their overseas production, so brands outside CIPA (for example many cinema-camera and drone makers) are not counted. Shipments to China (2,265,515 units, +16.3%) were close to the Americas total in 2025.
2. The Ownership Price Problem: Bodies and Lenses Cost Twice as Much
The strongest structural argument for renting is in CIPA’s average-price tables. The average interchangeable-lens camera shipped in 2025 was valued at 104,100 yen, up from 54,000 yen in 2019, a 1.93x increase (104.1 / 54.0) (CIPA Report, Total Shipments of Digital Still Cameras). Across all digital cameras, the average shipment price went from 13,500 yen in 2010 to 93,300 yen in 2025, which reflects the collapse of cheap compacts as much as pricier bodies.
Lenses followed the same path. The average interchangeable lens shipped in 2025 was valued at 48,700 yen versus 25,700 yen in 2019, and lenses for full-frame or larger cameras averaged 81,400 yen versus 48,600 yen (CIPA Report, Total Shipments of Interchangeable Lens). Full-frame bodies were 36.3% of interchangeable-lens units in 2025 but 59.7% of their value (435.1 / 729.1 billion yen), the premium tier where a weekend rental replaces the largest purchases.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average interchangeable-lens camera price, 2019 vs 2025 | 54,000 yen vs 104,100 yen | CIPA Report, 2026 |
| Average mirrorless camera price, 2022 peak vs 2025 | 128,500 yen vs 110,700 yen | CIPA Report, 2026 |
| Average digital camera price, 2010 vs 2025 | 13,500 yen vs 93,300 yen | CIPA Report, 2026 |
| Average interchangeable lens price, 2019 vs 2025 | 25,700 yen vs 48,700 yen | CIPA Report, 2026 |
| Average full-frame-or-larger lens price, 2019 vs 2025 | 48,600 yen vs 81,400 yen | CIPA Report, 2026 |
| Interchangeable lenses shipped, 2025 vs 2012 peak | 10.60 million vs 30.37 million | CIPA Report, 2026 |
| Full-frame-or-larger cameras, 2025 | 2,543,269 units (+1.9%), 435.1 billion yen (-4.4%) | CIPA, January-December 2025 |
Context note: these are factory shipment values in yen, not retail prices, and part of the rise reflects yen weakness against the dollar and euro over 2019-2025. The direction is still clear: fewer, more expensive bodies and lenses. Mirrorless average prices have eased since the 2022 peak, but remain far above pre-2020 levels.
3. 2026 So Far: Fewer Units, Higher Value, Cautious Manufacturers
The 2025 rebound has cooled. January-August 2026 camera shipments totaled 5,703,512 units, down 3.2% year over year, while their value rose 3.7% to 571.8 billion yen (CIPA, Production and Shipment of Digital Still Cameras, August 2026). Full-frame bodies fell 19.8% to 1,305,547 units, and DSLRs dropped another 35.0%. Lens shipments followed: 6,314,011 units through August (-4.9%) but 339.7 billion yen in value (+4.4%), per CIPA’s interchangeable lens statistics.
Manufacturers are planning for a flat market. Nikon expects the interchangeable-lens camera market at 7.0 million units and the interchangeable lens market at 10.0 million units in its year to March 2027, after its own imaging business sold 910,000 cameras and 1.3 million lenses on revenue of 290.0 billion yen in the year to March 2026 (Nikon, FY2026/3 Financial Results presentation with script). Nikon also launched the ZR, its first digital cinema camera using technology from RED, a sign that video-first bodies are where camera makers see growth.

| Canon interchangeable-lens camera market position | No. 1 for 23 consecutive years (2003-2025), Canon survey | Canon, February 24, 2026 |
Context note: from January 2026, CIPA added one more company to its camera statistics, so 2026 year-over-year comparisons partly reflect a change in coverage, as CIPA notes on the release. Canon’s market-share claim is based on its own survey and was published without a percentage (Canon, February 24, 2026); the release also counts 113 RF and EF lenses and 7 RF lenses launched in 2025.
4. Rental Marketplaces: Inventory, Prices, and Consolidation
Rental supply has shifted toward peer-to-peer listings, where independent owners rent out the gear they bought. ShareGrid says 150k+ creatives share 1 billion dollars in gear, with 11,093 cinema cameras, 10,842 cinema lenses and 8,735 audio items listed in October 2026 (ShareGrid). Lighting and electric (10,000 listings) rivals cameras, which shows how much of a shoot’s kit is now sourced from owners rather than rental houses. Our podcasting hosting and storage statistics cover the audio-production side of the creator workflow.
Traditional rental houses are consolidating. Lensrentals, founded in 2006 by Roger Cicala, reports over 250 employees in Memphis and Nashville and ships to all 50 states (Lensrentals, About Us), and BorrowLenses now states it has joined the Lensrentals family of brands (BorrowLenses). In Europe, Hygglo says it acquired Fat Llama, the UK’s biggest peer-to-peer rental platform, in 2022 and has facilitated more than one million rentals across seven countries (Hygglo, About Us). KitSplit, an earlier US peer-to-peer gear marketplace, displayed only a “We will be back shortly” notice when checked in October 2026 (KitSplit).

Context note: ShareGrid’s counts are live listing totals on its homepage, not completed rentals, and one owner can list many items. Lensrentals prices are homepage list prices on the day checked, with other featured items between 61 and 1,465 dollars for 7 days; they are not a market average. No platform discloses rental transaction volume or utilization rates.
5. Production Demand: Los Angeles Shoot Days Are Still Falling
Rental demand follows production calendars, and the biggest US market is still shrinking. Los Angeles logged 19,694 on-location shoot days in 2025, 16.1% below the 23,480 recorded in 2024 (FilmLA, Q4 and Year-to-Date 2025 Film Production Report). Television finished the year 50.1% below its five-year average, features 31.7% below and commercials 35.3% below.
The bright spot is the small-crew end of the market, the segment most likely to rent per job. In Q2 2026, FilmLA’s “Other” category (stills, documentaries, short films, online content, music videos and industrials) rose 10.0% to 2,118 shoot days, while total activity fell 12.7% to 4,711 (FilmLA, Q2 2026 report). TV dramas gained 55.1% over the prior quarter as California tax-credit projects began shooting.

| TV drama shoot days, Q2 2026 | 732 (-6.4% y/y, +55.1% vs Q1 2026) | FilmLA, Q2 2026 report |
Context note: FilmLA counts permitted on-location days in the Los Angeles area only; stage shoots and productions elsewhere in the US are not included. Q4 2025 shoot days (4,625) were up 5.6% from Q3 2025, a modest late-year uptick.
6. The Renters: Camera Operators, Sound Technicians and a Shrinking Industry Payroll
The people who rent gear are a small, freelance-heavy workforce. 35% of US camera operators are self-employed, against 11% of broadcast, sound and video technicians (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Film and Video Editors and Camera Operators). A self-employed operator who owns a body but rents cinema glass, lighting or audio per job is the core customer for both rental houses and peer-to-peer platforms.
The industry payroll is shrinking. Employment in US motion picture and sound recording industries was 328.5 thousand in September 2026 (preliminary), down 5.8% from 348.8 thousand a year earlier and 18.4% below the 402.6 thousand of January 2024 ((402.6 - 328.5) / 402.6) (BLS, Current Employment Statistics series CES5051200001). BLS projects only 1% growth for broadcast, sound and video technicians over 2025-2035, against 3% for editors and camera operators, and AI-driven narration is changing part of the voice workload, as covered in our AI voiceover in corporate video statistics.

| Same series, January 2024 | 402.6 thousand | BLS, CES 2026 |
| Camera operators: jobs / median wage | About 32,600 / 74,990 dollars (May 2025) | BLS OOH, 2025-2035 |
| Film and video editors and camera operators: projected growth / annual openings | 3% (2025-2035) / about 5,600 | BLS OOH, 2025-2035 |
| Broadcast, sound and video technicians: jobs / median wage | About 136,600 / 60,150 dollars | BLS OOH, 2025-2035 |
| Sound engineering technicians: jobs / median wage | About 15,000 / 73,130 dollars | BLS OOH, 2025-2035 |
| Broadcast, sound and video technicians: projected growth / annual openings | 1% (2025-2035) / about 9,800 | BLS OOH, 2025-2035 |
| Average hourly earnings, motion picture and sound recording, August 2026 | 43.14 dollars (preliminary) | BLS, Industries at a Glance 2026 |
Context note: the BLS occupational figures come from the Broadcast, Sound, and Video Technicians handbook page and the motion picture and sound recording Industries at a Glance page, which also lists 8,960 audio and video technicians employed inside the industry at a median of 61,090 dollars. Payroll employment excludes the self-employed, so the CES decline does not capture freelance work directly.

- Data watch: This is a thin-data topic. No rental platform publishes transaction volume, utilization or revenue, so the article uses five supply and demand indicators (shipments, prices, platform inventory, production days, workforce) rather than a rental market size. We could not cross-check a dollar market size for camera or audio equipment rental with two independent firms: the Grand View Research page returned a bot-verification screen, and no other research-firm figure could be read in full, so none is quoted. CIPA covers member companies only and added one company from January 2026, which affects 2026 year-over-year comparisons; CIPA values are in yen and partly reflect currency moves. Nikon’s figures are fiscal years ending in March. ShareGrid and Lensrentals figures are homepage snapshots (read via a text mirror) and will change daily. Hygglo’s one-million-rentals figure is self-reported and undated. FilmLA covers Los Angeles permitted location days only. BLS CES figures for August and September 2026 are preliminary and the BLS employment counts exclude the self-employed. Sony’s investor relations site, Canon’s IR results pages (403), Circana press pages (404) and Census County Business Patterns (API key required) could not be accessed and were not used. A Netflix approved-camera tally from a rental blog was excluded because its brand counts did not reconcile with its stated total.
