5G reached 2.94 billion subscriptions by the end of 2025 - roughly one-third of every mobile subscription on Earth - after adding around 600 million new subscriptions in a single year (Ericsson Mobility Report, November 2025). Yet reach still trails scale: 5G networks covered just 55 percent of the world’s population in 2025, split between 84 percent of people in high-income countries and 4 percent in low-income ones (ITU, Facts and Figures 2025). By the end of 2025, 5G carried 48 percent of all mobile data traffic, up from 34 percent a year earlier, and about 392 operators had launched commercial service (Ericsson Mobility Report, November 2025; GSA, State of the Market April 2026). This analysis consolidates data from the Ericsson Mobility Report, GSMA Intelligence, the ITU, Ookla, GSA, and 6 other primary sources to map where 5G adoption actually stands in 2026 - and where the gaps remain.
TL;DR
- 5G reached 2.94 billion subscriptions by the end of 2025, roughly one-third of all mobile subscriptions (Ericsson Mobility Report, November 2025).

- 5G devices made up 74.4 percent of smartphone shipments in 2025, up from 67.2 percent in 2024 (IDC, Worldwide Smartphone Forecast 2025).
- GSMA Intelligence forecasts 5.5 billion 5G connections by 2030, when 5G should reach 56 percent of all connections (GSMA Intelligence, The State of 5G 2026).
- Ericsson projects 6.4 billion 5G subscriptions by 2031 and the first 180 million 6G subscriptions that same year (Ericsson Mobility Report, November 2025).
1. Global 5G Scale and Growth Forecasts
Adoption has crossed the point where 5G is a mainstream default rather than a premium tier. 5G added roughly 600 million subscriptions in 2025 to hit 2.94 billion - the fastest single-year gain any mobile generation has posted at this stage of its life (Ericsson Mobility Report, November 2025). The forecasts from Ericsson and GSMA Intelligence disagree in absolute terms partly because they count differently: Ericsson tracks 5G “subscriptions” while GSMA tracks 5G “connections,” which excludes some SIM and machine categories. On the device side, 5G is now the shipping baseline, which is worth reading alongside our smartphone market statistics.
| Metric | Value | Source |

| 5G share of smartphone shipments, 2025 | 74.4% (up from 67.2% in 2024) | IDC, Worldwide Smartphone Forecast 2025 |
Context note: Ericsson expects 5G to overtake 4G as the dominant access technology by subscription around 2027, roughly nine years after launch (Ericsson Mobility Report, November 2025).
2. Coverage and the Digital Divide
Coverage is where the headline adoption numbers meet reality. A 5G network reaches 84 percent of people in high-income countries but only 4 percent in low-income countries - a 20-fold gap that maps almost exactly onto national income (ITU, Facts and Figures 2025). The same divide runs inside borders: two-thirds of urban residents worldwide have 5G, against 40 percent in rural areas. For the wider connectivity picture behind these gaps, see our global internet usage statistics.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Global population with 5G coverage, 2025 | 55% | ITU, Facts and Figures 2025 |
| High-income vs low-income coverage | 84% vs 4% | ITU, Facts and Figures 2025 |
| Europe / Asia-Pacific / Americas coverage | 74% / 70% / 60% | ITU, Facts and Figures 2025 |
| Arab States / Africa / CIS coverage | 13% / 12% / 8% | ITU, Facts and Figures 2025 |
| Urban vs rural 5G coverage | 66% vs 40% (26pp gap) | ITU, Facts and Figures 2025 |
| People who gained 5G access in 2025 | +400 million | Ericsson Mobility Report, Nov 2025 |
Outlier note: for reference, 4G still reaches 93 percent of the world’s population, so most of the uncovered are within range of mobile broadband but not 5G (ITU, Facts and Figures 2025).
3. Country and Regional Leaders
Adoption is heavily concentrated. China alone accounts for 1.204 billion 5G subscriptions - more than a third of the global total - backed by 4.838 million 5G base stations, or 34.4 per 10,000 people (MIIT, January 2026). India is the fastest-scaling large market, passing 400 million 5G subscribers within three years of launch, while North America holds the highest penetration rate at 79 percent.

Outlier note: India had 518,854 5G base stations in operation by the end of 2025, up from about 464,990 at the start of the year (RCR Wireless, January 2026).
4. Network Evolution: Standalone, 5G-Advanced, and Slicing
Raw coverage is no longer the frontier; the capability gap is. About 1.65 billion of the 2.94 billion 5G subscriptions - roughly 56 percent - now run on 5G Standalone, the native 5G core that enables network slicing and low-latency services (Ericsson Mobility Report, November 2025). Standalone launches are accelerating, but true 5G-Advanced remains early. Ericsson reports 33 service providers now offer network slicing, with 65 slicing cases already commercial rather than trials.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 5G Standalone subscriptions, end 2025 | 1.65 billion (about 56% of 5G) | Ericsson Mobility Report, Nov 2025 |
| Operators launched 5G Standalone, Apr 2026 | 95 (up 42% since Q1 2025) | GSA, 5G Standalone |
| Operators investing in 5G-Advanced | 35 (11 launched) | GSA, State of the Market April 2026 |

Outlier note: GSA’s February 2026 count was more conservative at 28 operators investing in 5G-Advanced and 7 launched, underlining how fast this metric moved through Q1 2026 (GSA, 2026).
5. Mobile Data Traffic and the 5G Load
5G is now doing the heavy lifting on the network. 5G’s share of mobile data traffic climbed from 34 percent to 48 percent across 2025 and is forecast to reach 83 percent by 2031 (Ericsson Mobility Report, November 2025). Total mobile traffic grew 20 percent year on year, and the average active smartphone consumed 22 GB per month - with India’s region topping the table at 37 GB. Video-heavy uses such as cloud gaming ride directly on this capacity; see our mobile gaming statistics.

Outlier note: Western Europe and the MENA region are forecast to see the fastest per-smartphone traffic growth through 2031 at a 15 percent CAGR (Ericsson Mobility Report, November 2025).
6. Fixed Wireless Access: 5G as Home Broadband
FWA is the clearest 5G monetization story outside the smartphone. Global fixed wireless access reached 185 million connections at the end of 2025 and already carries 28 percent of all mobile network data traffic (Ericsson Mobility Report, November 2025). Adoption is now near-universal among operators - 83 percent offer FWA and 71 percent of those run it over 5G - making it a direct competitor to fixed and satellite home broadband, a comparison we cover in our Starlink satellite internet statistics.

Outlier note: FWA traffic is projected to more than triple to about 187 EB per month by 2031, reaching 36 percent of total mobile network traffic (Ericsson Mobility Report, FWA outlook 2025).
7. Speed Benchmarks and the Road to 6G
Performance now varies more by market than by generation. The global median 5G Standalone download speed was 269.51 Mbps in 2025, but the UAE hit 1.24 Gbps on 5G SA - roughly five times the global median - showing how far carrier aggregation and dense spectrum can stretch the same standard (Ookla, Speedtest Intelligence 2025). Meanwhile the successor is already on the calendar: standards bodies target the first commercial 6G around 2030, and Ericsson expects 180 million 6G subscriptions by the end of 2031. For fixed-line context, compare our internet speed statistics.
